An indicator of a performance's triumph is its haul of Tony Awards, and the remarkable production has quite a few. Out of 14 nominations it earned for the 2019 Tony Awards, Hadestown clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Furthermore, the production was honored with accolades for its mesmerizing music composed by David Mitchell, the masterful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the ingenious scenic design, the striking sound design, the artful lighting design, and the artful orchestrations.

In Anais Mitchell's reinterpretation of a Greek legend, Eurydice is shown as a young woman adept in navigating on her own in a world characterized by unpredictability, even in weather conditions. Conversely, Orpheus is a passionate singer-songwriter filled with feelings. After their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, in which Hades transforms his workers into automated drones.

Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, with the assistance of his musical tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he succeeds in bringing her back to his abode.

The cast is compact, made up of merely 13 members, who stay put on the forefront for the majority of the performance. The chorus consists of five cast members, who lend their voices and dance in the background to heighten the vitality of the songs. Among the performers are the 3 Fates, who sing, converse, and interact with the characters. The entire seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all with the exception of the drummer are on display on stage. The main characters include the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.

Entertainment Weekly showered praises on the Broadway rendition, remarked, “When it comes to tales as ancient as time, the narratives of Greek mythology rank at the top, those epic stories of gods and mortals that have been recounted for centuries, inspiring countless adaptations. However, there's something remarkably modern and fresh about the way those stories - those ancient ballads, those poignant ballads - are delivered in Hadestown. As it premieres on Broadway, this voyage to the underworld feels as though it's a completely new invention.”
