What to expect
A trip to the Ahmanson Theatre places you in downtown LA. With skyscrapers and palm trees lining the streets outside, it’s a pleasant place to have a stroll before your show. And, with an array of cultures represented through the local bars and restaurants, it’s a great place to spend an afternoon.
The building itself is pretty striking. Built in the 1960s, the theater has a modern exterior, with plenty of glass and a colonnade that connects it to the Mark Taper Forum.
You are advised to arrive at the Ahmanson Theatre around one hour before showtime. This allows plenty of time to park, pass through security, make any purchases, and find your seats.
Once inside, you’ll find the Ahmanson Theatre has a classical theater feel. The auditorium has three levels: the orchestra, mezzanine, and balcony. These are arranged to surround the stage rather than fall away, giving the whole place an immersive feel. Renovations have ensured that all seats receive great lines of sight and acoustics.
The venue has an official seating capacity of 2,109. You’ll notice reds and golds complemented by deep gray and black among the furnishings, giving a rich feel to the whole experience. While the venue is now over 50 years old, it certainly still makes for a great show.
