The true story of Leo Frank is familiar to most: A young Jewish American man arrested for a murder he did not commit.
After an extensive, yet distorted trial heavily influenced by injustices, discrimination, media sensation, dishonesty, and misinformation, Leo Frank is imprisoned, and eventually lynched. This unfortunate true event shaped the establishment of Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights organization, and on the opposite end, the Ku Klux Klan.
Even though the tale is heartbreaking and sometimes shocking, ‘Parade’ is art at its very best, exploring complex human emotions while being filled with hope, and is guaranteed to leave you contemplating it long after the curtain falls.
Not only does it serve as a stark reminder that history often repeats itself, but also reminds of the power of art to challenge, illuminate, and reflect. It’s been over a century since Leo Frank’s trial, and still audience members are moved and changed by the poignancy of this tale.
When Alfred Uhry’s magnificent book, Jason Robert Brown’s exceptional music and lyrics, and Michael Arden’s direction came together in a gorgeous hotpot of true art, the extraordinarily layered, emotional, and passionate ‘Parade’ was born. one of the biggest must-sees in modern theatre.
If you were still wondering whether it would be worth it, let the tremendous amounts of accolades do the talking. To date ‘Parade’ has received four Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, among plenty of nominations.
From the themes of division, mob mentality, prejudice, corruption, and skin-crawling relevance thereof to the compelling score moving from earnest to showstopper in the blink of an eye; from the visually striking imagery to the charisma and jaw-dropping performances by the world-renowned cast; from the enrapturing tale with the fierce love between husband and wife at the core; to the the breathtaking display of artistic genius - ‘Parade’ is marching on, and long after the theatre lights have dimmed and the doors closed, you’ll think about just how outstanding it was.
