Set side by side with the original known story of Romeo & Juliet which debuted live on stage roughly forty decades prior, fans have distinguished the many modifications which were made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern show based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original drama is based around the tragic tale that occurs because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic tale and instead embraces a more positive outlook by concentrating on the endless possibilities of life, even after such agonizing experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who make the trip to Paris and discover their identities not just as individuals, but as powerful women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes control of her husband’s account and alters the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while recruiting new and equally powerful women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the musical is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent years, that symbolize the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the production. Even the costumes worn by the musical’s cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while conveying the contrast between the ongoing show and the previous classic by using Elizabethan costumes and iconography with today’s costume styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to emphasize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
