“Even if you aren’t a fan of ABBA, you’ll be a fan of ‘Mamma Mia’! Make sure to see it before it slips through your fingers!” – DC Metro Theatre Arts

Knowing me, knowing you, this is the one trip down the aisle none of us will be able to resist. It’s enough to turn anybody and everybody into a dancing queen, whether they want to or not, so don’t be surprised if the entire audience jumps up with total elation. It’s the one jukebox musical that gets it right every single time, and no matter how many times you’ve seen it, you’ll always keep coming back for more – and that’s the name of the game.

It’s been just about 25 years after it knocked Broadway completely off its axis with its feel-good vibe, those characters that you can’t help to fall head over heels in love with, the story that makes the heart beats faster, and the ABBA hits that even makes the endorphins tap their toes, and it’s hitting the road for one last time – an opportunity you simply can’t allow to be slipping through your fingers! To date, over 600 million people have seen casts of remarkably and naturally talented showmen and women bring the world’s favorite jukebox musical to life – so the question remains: will you be one of them this time around? That’s right Los Angeles – the showstopping sensation Mamma Mia! is coming to the Ahmanson Theatre soon!

SYNOPSIS

“Ridiculously enjoyable!” – The Daily Telegraph

Somewhere on the breathtaking Greek Island Kalokairi, young Sophie is getting ready to marry her fiancé. The one thing she’d really love is for her father to walk her down the aisle, but the only problem is that she doesn’t know who her father is. She comes across her mother Donna’s diary, in which she finds entries about three men around the same time – American architect Sam Carmichael, Australian adventurer Bill Austin, and British banker Harry Bright, and invites all three of them to her wedding.

Meanwhile, Donna is reuniting with her two best friends and previous girl-group partners Tanya and Rosie. While preparations for the stunning island wedding continues, Sophie tries to get to the bottom of which of the three men would be the one walking her down the aisles, Donna is faced with three blasts from her past, and love blossoms – old and new. But who would end up being the father of the bride?

Mamma Mia! is without a doubt one of the world’s most adored and successful jukebox musicals – in fact, it is the father of all jukebox musicals. It is super entertaining, it boasts off-the-charts energy, it is exuberant and joyful, with every single ABBA song a favorite. If you were to choose a high-point about it, you’d be struggling, because the entire musical is a high-point, from when the first notes of I Have a Dream rings through the auditorium until the lights fade out.

HISTORY & LEGACY

Mamma Mia! is the brainchild of British playwright Catherine Johnson, inspired by the iconic music recorded by Swedish group ABBA, as composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.

Mamma Mia! premiered in the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre in April 1999 to massive critical acclaim, resulting in ABBA’s 1992 compilation album Abba Gold: Greatest Hits topping the charts once more. This production was headed up by director Phyllida Lloyd and choreographer Anthony Van Laast as well. In 2024, Mamma Mia! celebrated its 10,000th performance in London.

Mamma Mia! had its Broadway premiere in 2001 at the Winter Garden Theatre, becoming the ninth longest-running musical on Broadway, and the longest-running jukebox musical ever on Broadway.

To date, Mamma Mia! has racked up a substantial amount of accolades, including a Laurence Olivier Award and a Touring Broadway Award, alongside a Grammy Award nominations, five Tony Award nominations, two Drama Desk Award nominations, and a Helen Hayes Award nomination.

“‘Mamma Mia!’ is more than just a musical – it’s a brilliant homage to life, love, and ABBA.” – The Daily Cardinal
